HSR 150 - Celebrating 150 Years of Connections

Tourism Hamilton is excited to present "Take a Ride with HSR: Celebrating 150 Years of Connections," a special exhibit at the Visitor Experience Centre, honoring the Hamilton Street Railway's (HSR) remarkable 150 years of service to the Hamilton community.

Date: May 21 to December 21, 2024

Time: 10 am to 4 pm daily

Location: Tourism Hamilton Visitor Experience Centre 28 James St. N Hamilton ON

This free exhibit takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring the rich history of HSR and its significant contributions to the city of Hamilton. From its humble beginnings in 1874 to the modern transit system it is today, the exhibit highlights key moments, milestones, and innovations that have shaped HSR over the past 150 years.

$1.50 Fare Days:

To celebrate HSR's 150th year of service, customers can enjoy $1.50 fares on all buses on select dates throughout 2024. The first $1.50 Fare Day will take place on Monday, May 20, 2024. Stay tuned for more $1.50 Fare Days by subscribing to Bus News and following HSR on social media.

Retro Wrapped Buses:

Keep an eye out for HSR's retro wrapped buses, coming soon to city streets! During Customer Appreciation Week, your ride on a retro wrap is on us. These commemorative buses will be on various routes throughout the city, offering passengers a nostalgic journey through Hamilton's transit history.

HSR 150 Merchandise:

HSR's friendly Customer Experience staff will be out and about meeting customers and may even have some HSR 150 merch to share. Stay tuned to HSR's social media channels for updates on where to find them.

Limited Edition PRESTO Cards:

Starting May 21, visitors can purchase a limited-edition HSR 150 PRESTO card at HSR Customer Service, 36 Hunter St. E. These commemorative cards feature the iconic horse and buggy, paying homage to HSR's rich history. Hurry, as supplies are limited!

A Look Back in Time

In May 1874, Hamilton entered the "modern era" with the introduction of the first Hamilton Street Railway horse-drawn streetcar. Over the years, HSR evolved, transitioning to electric streetcars in 1892 and eventually phasing out streetcars in favor of buses in 1951.
